Meeting your driver
International terminal: drivers wait outside the arrivals exit on the left side. The airport is compact — exit the building, turn left, and look for your name sign. Domestic terminal: similar layout, drivers wait outside the main exit.
Journey time by time of day
Fastest: Sunday early mornings (before 08:00) and late weekday nights (after 22:00) are the fastest — the 7 km drive to District 1 takes just 15–25 minutes when the motorbike swarm is at its thinnest.
Slowest: Weekday evening rush (17:00–19:30) on Truong Son and Nam Ky Khoi Nghia can turn the 7 km trip into a 45–60 minute crawl through motorbike traffic. Saturday evenings are similar. Monsoon rain compounds everything.
Weekends: Saturdays are the second-worst day. Sunday mornings are consistently the best window. Tet (Lunar New Year) week shuts everything down.
Luggage and special requirements
Child seats: Vietnamese law requires child seats for children under 10 (introduced 2024, enforcement still developing). Welcome Pickups provides them free on every SGN booking. Kiwitaxi charges a small supplement. For GetTransfer and intui.travel, explicitly request — the majority of Vietnamese private drivers still don't carry seats by default.
Oversized items: SGN handles significant backpacker traffic with oversized luggage for extended SE Asia trips. For 3+ large bags or oversized items, specifically request a wagon — Vietnamese taxis and transfers are often compact cars that struggle with volume.
Tips for this route
Traffic is notoriously bad — the 8 km journey can take 45+ minutes during rush hour (7–9 AM, 5–7 PM).
Grab (Southeast Asian Uber) is the cheapest option but surge pricing during peak arrivals can double the fare.
Avoid unofficial taxis — only use Vinasun (white) or Mai Linh (green) for metered rides. All others risk meter tampering.
Pre-booked transfers eliminate negotiation stress and scam risk — especially valuable for first-time visitors.
The airport has free Wi-Fi in arrivals — connect to contact your driver if needed before exiting.
If heading to Bui Vien (backpacker street), specify the exact address — drivers sometimes confuse it with other streets.
