Taxi and Uber context
Use only Vinasun (white) or Mai Linh (green) taxis — they use meters honestly. Avoid any other taxi companies or touts. Grab (Southeast Asia's Uber) is also reliable and often cheaper. This is why pre-booked transfers are popular — fixed prices, no surprises.
Local tip
Ho Chi Minh City's SGN is unusually close to downtown — just 7 km to District 1, which makes it one of the cheapest airport transfer cities in Asia. Grab (the regional Uber) runs 120,000–200,000 VND (€5–8) for standard cars. Official green-colored Vinasun or Mai Linh taxis charge similar metered rates. Pre-booked transfers at €8–18 are competitive because the distance is so short, and the meet-and-greet value is real for first-time visitors.
How we rated each service
For HCMC we weighted price realism (the market is genuinely cheap and any big premium has to justify itself), English communication with drivers (Vietnamese is a tonal language and Google Translate has limits), and handling of the notorious District 1 traffic during evening rush.
Our verdict
HCMC is a light-touch pre-book recommendation: Grab is cheap and reliable for most travelers, but pre-booked transfers win for first-time visitors nervous about Vietnamese taxi scams (which do exist with unofficial 'SG Taxi' copycats), families with seats needed, and arrivals after midnight when Grab surge and taxi reliability both deteriorate. Welcome Pickups and Kiwitaxi both have solid SGN driver rosters.

Common questions about transfer services
GetTransfer bids for SGN → District 1 commonly win at 180,000–280,000 VND (€7–11) — roughly matching a legitimate Grab or Vinasun ride. Price is not a strong differentiator here; reliability and meet-and-greet are the real value.
Use only Vinasun (white) or Mai Linh (green) taxis — they use meters honestly. Avoid any other taxi companies or touts. Grab (Southeast Asia's Uber) is also reliable and often cheaper. Pre-booked transfers offer fixed pricing, meet-and-greet, and flight tracking — worth it for families, groups, and late arrivals.
24 hours ahead is enough in HCMC year-round. The exceptions: Tet (Lunar New Year, late January/early February) when driver availability collapses for a week and prices surge — book 2+ weeks ahead for Tet arrivals or departures.
Vietnamese law requires child seats for children under 10 (introduced 2024, enforcement still developing). Welcome Pickups provides them free. Kiwitaxi charges a small supplement. For GetTransfer bids and intui.travel, explicitly request — the majority of Vietnamese private drivers still don't carry seats by default.
SGN has reliable flight tracking through all four platforms. A Vietnam-specific note: immigration for visa-on-arrival can run 45–60 minutes on a busy Saturday morning. Mention this when booking so the driver knows to wait — the 60-minute free buffer usually covers it.
