Tan Son Nhat Airport (SGN)
SGN is just 8 km from the city center — one of the closest major airports in Southeast Asia. The airport has separate International and Domestic terminals (10-min walk apart). International Arrivals is on the ground floor.
No rail connection (metro Line 1 to the airport planned for 2028+).
Bus 109 to Ben Thanh market area: VND 20,000 (~$0.80), 45-60 min. Bus 152 to the city center: VND 5,000 (~$0.20) but very crowded.
HCMC taxis are cheap but scams exist. Use only Vinasun (white) or Mai Linh (green) taxis. Avoid unmarked cars. Grab is the safest option.
Kiwitaxi — Fixed prices from ~$8 to District 1. Eliminates taxi scam risk.
GetTransfer — Bids from $5 to District 1. Extremely affordable due to short distance.

Grab is the dominant and safest transport option. Works at SGN with designated pickup. Strongly recommended over taxis.
Bus 152 to Phạm Ngũ Lão (backpacker area, 45 min, VND 5,000/$0.20) is extremely cheap but slow and crowded.
Motorbike traffic: HCMC has 8+ million motorbikes. Traffic is chaotic but moves — journey times from the airport (8 km) range from 20 minutes (late night) to 60+ minutes (rush hour). Don't be alarmed by the traffic style.
Vinasun and Mai Linh only: If taking a taxi, use ONLY Vinasun (white) or Mai Linh (green) — they use meters honestly. All other companies risk overcharging, fake meters, or longer routes. Grab (the Southeast Asian Uber) is also reliable.
Cash is king: Vietnam is still heavily cash-based. ATMs at SGN airport dispense VND. Bring some USD to exchange — the rate at airport exchange counters is fair. Credit cards work at hotels and upscale restaurants but not street food or small shops.
Weather and timing: HCMC has two seasons: dry (November-April) and wet (May-October). During wet season, afternoon thunderstorms can cause traffic jams and flooding. Morning flights/arrivals are smoother.
Grab is king in HCMC — safe, cheap, widely available. Download it before you arrive. For airport pickups, request GrabCar (4-seat sedan) or GrabCar 7 (larger vehicle). Prices from SGN to District 1 are typically VND 80,000-150,000 (~$3-6).
Pre-booked transfer wins for: Groups with lots of luggage, families needing car seats (rare in Vietnam), travelers wanting guaranteed English-speaking drivers, and anyone arriving on their first visit to Vietnam wanting a stress-free introduction.

Prices for a sedan (up to 3 passengers). GetTransfer prices are typical winning bids. See our full comparison for Ho Chi Minh City for detailed pricing by route.
Currency: VND (đồng). Have some local currency for small purchases — many taxi meters display in local currency.
Language: Vietnamese (limited English) Having your hotel address saved on your phone (screenshot or Google Maps pin) is always helpful for drivers.
Tipping: VND 20,000-50,000 (~$1-2) is appreciated. Not expected.
Safety: Use ONLY Vinasun (white) or Mai Linh (green) taxis — they're metered and honest. All other taxi brands risk overcharging. Grab is the safest ride-hailing option.
SIM / connectivity: Vietnamese SIM cards from Viettel, Mobifone, or Vinaphone at SGN. Tourist SIMs from VND 100,000 (~$4) for 30 days data.
Tip 1: Grab is the safest and most reliable option. Download it before landing.
Tip 2: The airport is only 8 km from District 1 but HCMC traffic is brutal. Expect 30-60 min during peak hours for this short distance.
Tip 3: Only use Vinasun (white) or Mai Linh (green) taxis if not using Grab. Other companies may have tampered meters.
