Airport taxi (negotiate before entering, expect EGP 250–400), Cairo Metro ($0.30, but no direct airport connection yet), Uber/Careem ($5–10)
Meeting your driver
Terminal 2 and Terminal 3: drivers wait in the arrivals hall near the exit. The airport has aggressive touts — walk past them directly to your driver with the name sign. Terminal 1 (older terminal): drivers wait outside the exit doors.
Journey time by time of day
Fastest: Friday mornings before noon (the Islamic weekend equivalent) and very late evenings are the fastest — the 22 km trip can take just 30–35 minutes when the Ring Road is unusually empty.
Slowest: Sunday through Thursday evening traffic (17:00–21:00) on the Ring Road and Salah Salem Street can turn the drive into a 75–90 minute crawl. Egyptian driving norms make this unpredictable even for experienced drivers.
Weekends: Fridays are genuinely the best day for airport-to-downtown drives in Cairo. Saturdays are similar to weekdays. Ramadan iftar time (dusk) causes brief but extreme traffic clearing as drivers rush home.
Luggage and special requirements
Child seats: Egyptian law does not require child seats and most local drivers don't carry them. Welcome Pickups provides seats free on explicit request — book at least 48 hours ahead. Kiwitaxi offers them as a paid add-on. Do not assume GetTransfer or intui.travel drivers will have one.
Oversized items: Cairo is rarely a ski or surf destination, but cruise passengers connecting to Alexandria or luxor-bound travelers with multiple large bags should request a minivan or large SUV when booking — many Cairo sedans are older and have limited trunk space.
Tips for this route
Cairo Airport touts are extremely persistent — ignore anyone approaching you in the terminal offering rides or 'official taxi' services.
If taking a regular taxi, agree on the price BEFORE getting in. Never use a taxi that doesn't agree to a fixed price.
Uber and Careem (local rival) both operate from CAI and are much safer than street taxis for first-time visitors.
Traffic in Cairo is legendary — the 22 km journey can take 60–90 minutes during peak hours (8–10 AM, 4–7 PM).
For Giza Pyramids area, add 30–45 min to the journey depending on traffic. Specify 'Giza' not just 'Cairo' when booking.
Pre-booked transfers offer the best combination of safety, fixed pricing, and reliability at CAI.
