Tan Son Nhat to District 1 in 2026: What Actually Works
Ho Chi Minh City's airport is close to the centre, which makes the fare small and the scam margin enormous. The difference between the right car and the wrong one is roughly ten times the price for the same seven kilometres.
The numbers, so you know what wrong looks like
Tan Son Nhat is about 6 to 8 km from District 1, a 25 to 45 minute drive depending on traffic. A Grab to the centre typically costs 110,000 to 250,000 VND, around 5 to 11 US dollars, with most ordinary daytime runs landing near the bottom of that range.
A properly metered Vinasun or Mai Linh taxi is similar: roughly 130,000 to 230,000 VND to Ben Thanh Market including the small airport surcharge and the flyover toll.
The scam version quotes a flat 300,000 to 500,000 VND, and the worst cases run to 40 to 60 US dollars. If anyone quotes you a fixed price in that territory for a seven-kilometre ride, that is the tell.
The scam is specific and it happens inside the terminal
The mechanic is consistent across years of traveller reports. Someone approaches you in or just outside arrivals, often claiming to represent Vinasun or Mai Linh, and offers a flat fare. Genuine Vinasun and Mai Linh drivers wait in the official queue and are not permitted to solicit passengers, so anyone approaching you is by definition not one of them.
The documented failure mode is unpleasant: bags loaded, doors locked, meter never switched on, and a flat demand on arrival. Travellers describe seeing the driver hand cash to an attendant on the way in, which is the airport-side half of the arrangement.
The defence is simple and absolute. Ignore anyone who approaches you. Either walk to the official rank and use only Vinasun or Mai Linh with the meter visibly running from zero, or use the app.
The Grab pickup point is the thing nobody explains
This catches almost every first-time arrival. You cannot order a Grab at the curb outside international arrivals at Terminal 2 — the airport blocks ride-hailing from the main pickup lane, and drivers who accept there will cancel.
The actual route: leave arrivals, cross at the pedestrian crossing near the Lucky Café, look for the large green Grab sign, cross the zebra crossing toward the car park, and follow the ride-hailing sign to the sheltered area marked D. At Terminal 1 for domestic arrivals it is simpler — the ground floor of the same parking structure.
Two practical consequences. First, you need a working SIM or eSIM before you land, because the whole thing depends on the app. Second, expect touts along that walk; they are persistent and they will claim to be your Grab driver.
Grab surges 1.3 to 1.8 times in rain and during rush hours, roughly 7 to 9am and 5 to 7pm, and Friday evenings are the worst of it.
The cheap options and the pre-booked one
Buses 152 and 109 run into the centre for 6,000 and 15,000 VND respectively — genuinely negligible money, about 45 minutes, and fine with a backpack. There is no metro or rail link to the airport as of 2026.
A pre-booked private transfer sits at the other end, and in Saigon its value is not comfort but the walk you skip. The driver waits inside arrivals with your name, which removes the entire tout gauntlet and the car park hunt at the exact moment you are least equipped to handle either — jet-lagged, at night, without local data.
Welcome Pickups covers Ho Chi Minh City with vetted local drivers and in-terminal meet-and-greet. Kiwitaxi fixes the price and vehicle class at booking with free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead, which matters if you are arriving with more luggage than a compact sedan takes.
For the lowest fare on a specified vehicle, GetTransfer puts drivers in competition, and intui.travel handles shared shuttles at roughly 40 to 60 per cent below a private car.
The short version
Backpack, daylight, local SIM already working: Grab, walking to area D. Around 110,000 VND and completely fine.
No data, or you would rather not cross a car park: the official rank, Vinasun or Mai Linh only, meter from zero.
Night arrival, family, heavy luggage, or a first visit: pre-book. Seven kilometres is not the problem here — the first ninety seconds outside arrivals is.
