Grab is genuinely good, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. The question is narrower than which service is better overall: it is which one handles a delayed flight, a night arrival and four suitcases.
Two models, one airport
Grab prices dynamically from live demand and driver supply. You see the fare before confirming, which removes the meter anxiety that makes street taxis unpleasant across the region, and on a normal day it is cheap.
Kiwitaxi sells a fixed fare booked in advance across 100+ countries, with the vehicle class agreed at booking and free cancellation up to 24 hours before pickup. Nothing about the price responds to how many flights landed at the same time as yours.
Where the fixed fare actually beats the app
Surge is concentrated exactly where airports are. In Singapore a fare can move from SGD 25 to SGD 50 or more when several flights land together. In Phuket the post-midnight surge runs 20 to 40 per cent. In Bangkok, rain reliably doubles fares and the 1 to 2am peak can reach 2.5 times base.
Long routes compound the problem, because surge scales with distance. Bali airport to Ubud is the standard example: IDR 200,000 to 320,000 in normal conditions, and considerably more when driver availability drops, which happens often on that run.
A fixed fare booked six weeks earlier is indifferent to all of it.
Flight delays are where the models genuinely diverge
Grab is booked after you land, so a delay does not lose you a booking. What it does do is drop you into whatever market conditions exist at 3am instead of the 9pm you planned for, with fewer drivers and higher multipliers.
Kiwitaxi assigns a local licensed operator against your flight number, so a delayed arrival moves the pickup rather than voiding it. The driver is waiting when you actually clear customs.
The practical difference is not convenience, it is variance. One model gives you a known number and a known car; the other gives you a distribution.
Coverage and terminal access
Grab drivers frequently cannot enter the arrivals lane. At Phuket the pickup is a booth near the domestic terminal; at Indonesian airports it can be a 10 to 15 minute walk to an Online Transport Lounge outside the terminal structure. Licensed transfer operators use the lane the airport recognises.
Coverage also thins outside the major cities. Grab is excellent in central Bangkok and patchier at the edges; Kiwitaxi contracts operators per route in advance, so availability on a secondary airport or resort run is confirmed before you fly rather than discovered on arrival.
And Grab requires a working phone with data at the moment of landing, which is a real dependency on a first arrival in an unfamiliar country.
The honest recommendation
Use Grab when you are one or two people with light bags, arriving in daylight, in a city where it is well established, with data on your phone and flexibility in your evening. It is cheaper and perfectly good.
Use Kiwitaxi when you are landing at an awkward hour, travelling with children or checked luggage, heading somewhere long or remote, or when arriving late would cost you more than the fare difference.
